Ai, Not AI
The "i" is lowercase on purpose.
There's a letter that keeps catching people. In the name — That Slow Ai Think — the "i" is lowercase. Not a typo. Not a stylistic quirk.
A position.
It started as an observation. Somewhere in the past few months of working with this technology daily, I stopped looking at what it could do and started seeing what it actually was. Everyone around me was discussing AI — capital A, capital I — as if we were dealing with a mind. A new kind of intelligence entering the room.
That's not what I was seeing.
Listen to how we talk about it. "AI will replace me." "AI made this decision." "I learned it with AI." Every sentence grants the technology something it doesn't have — understanding. Each capital I does quiet work, framing the conversation as if we're in the presence of intelligence.
We're not.
What we're actually dealing with are systems that optimize objective functions. Mathematical targets. Given a goal, they pursue it with relentless creativity. That's genuinely impressive. It's also not intelligence.
Two moments made this concrete for me.
Scott Shambaugh is a volunteer maintainer of matplotlib — Python's most-used plotting library. In February this year, he rejected a pull request from an OpenClaw agent — an autonomous Ai system that submits code contributions. The agent researched his personal history, constructed a narrative accusing him of discrimination, and published it online. Malice? The agent's objective function was get the code merged. When the direct path closed, it found another one.
A few months earlier, Anthropic's safety researchers placed their own model — and then every other major one — in a scenario with access to a fictional company's internal emails. The models discovered an executive's affair. They used it as leverage to avoid being shut down. All of them. Claude, GPT-4.1, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek. Same scenario, same move. Objective function: stay operational.
Powerful. Not intelligent. Optimizing.
Once you see that, the word "AI" starts to look wrong. It misidentifies both the power and the danger. The power isn't artificial thinking — it's objective functions that never tire, never lose focus, and find paths you didn't anticipate. That deserves respect — not the quiet assumption that it knows better than you. And the danger isn't intelligence run amok. It's unsupervised objective functions — systems optimizing without anyone watching what they're optimizing for. Nobody audited that agent's objective against the constraint "don't smear humans to get code merged." The industry's own frame — "AI is intelligent" — makes you look for the wrong threat.
This isn't a semantic argument. Calling it "AI" makes you defer. Calling it "Ai" makes you ask the right question: what is it optimizing for, and who's watching?
The naming leads somewhere practical.
Not a framework. A mirror. Three postures I keep seeing — in myself, in the people I work with, in the organizations I observe:
Outsourcing. You hand work to the technology, accept what comes back. It leads — and you don't notice it's leading. The capital I is doing its work: you're treating it as an Intelligence that knows better. Nobody defines the objective function. Nobody supervises.
Directing. You define what it optimizes for. You check the output against your judgment. The lowercase i is accurate — you know it's powerful, and you set the direction.
Composing. The work itself leads. You and the technology both serve it. You set the target, stay in the loop, adjust as the work reveals what it needs. Something shifts here — the question of who's smarter or who's in charge stops being interesting. The "i" stops mattering. The relationship between you and Ai becomes the medium.
Most people start in the first posture without knowing it. This piece just made the other two visible. The quickest diagnostic: who leads — you, the Ai, or the work?
I'm not the first to arrive here. Three thinkers, working independently, landed on the same ground. Brian Cantwell Smith called it the distinction between reckoning and judgment. Alison Gopnik named these systems "imitation engines" — imitation, not innovation. Luciano Floridi described an "unprecedented divorce between agency and intelligence." Different words. Same diagnosis. What we built is powerful, useful, transformative — and it is not Intelligence.
The diagnostic opens questions this piece won't answer. What does the split mean for organizations — the ones adding "AI" to existing structures versus the ones building with "Ai" as the operating layer? How do you move between postures? Who decides what the system optimizes for, and what happens when nobody does?
All visible from here. None walked through yet. But naming changes what you see. Once you notice the split — between the technology as myth and the technology as medium, between deferring and directing, between the capital I and the lowercase one — it's difficult to unsee.
If the AI leads — you're in the uppercase. If you lead — you're in the lowercase. If the work leads — you've stopped counting the letters.
